Juan Pablo Cancela is conducting a Ph.D. in Ecological entomology by the University of the Azores starting in 2020 within the Plant-Soil ecology and Island Biodiversity, Biogeography & Conservation groups of cE3c. He is conducting the project "Arthropod assemblage response to nitrogen pollution in Mediterranean shrublands", under the supervision of Paulo A.V. Borgues (University of the Azores/cE3c), Teresa Dias (FCULl/cE3c) and Luisa Carvalheiro (University of Goiás/cE3c). Juan Pablo's Ph.D. project aims are: (1) To evaluate how N-pollution affects plant-arthropod interactions (potentially affecting ecosystem functioning); (2) To detect N-induced changes in plant and arthropod physiology by using the natural abundance of N stable isotopes; (3) To identify species or functional groups that can be used as environmental indicators of N-pollution in similar Mediterranean ecosystem areas.
