Nova espécie de abelha nos Açores - Chalicodoma pyrenaica (Lepeletier, 1841)

This bee species Chalicodoma pyrenaica (Lepeletier 1841), family Apidae, was first seen in the Azores near the Santa Maria airport in the years 2012 and 2013. Specie identification was confirmed by Prof. Dr. Anselm Kratochwil from the University of Osnabrück in Germany. This species is known from the southwest and southern Europe: Spain, Pyrenees, Alps, Greece, Turkey and Caucasus. The nests of these bees are built by mortar in rocky places, house walls or stones. It is thought that its introduction in the Azores, near the Santa Maria airport, may have occurred by the presence of a nest, or several, fixed in a stone, terracotta pot or similar object from another part of Europe
