Two researchers from the Azorean Biodiversity Group - (CITA-A, DCA, University of the Azores) succeeded to pass to the second stage of the Regional Entrepreneurship Competition (CRE) 2014 organized by SDEA

Two researchers from the Azorean Biodiversity Group - (CITA-A, DCA, University of the Azores) succeeded to pass to the second stage of the Regional Entrepreneurship Competition (CRE) 2014 organized by SDEA (Society for Business Development of the Azores) with a project meant to create a company that will produce Shiitake mushrooms on logs.

Rui Carvalho and Isabel Amorim, working on the GBA team, and the entrepreneur Nuno Rocha form the team that got to the the top five business ideas in contest. The projects that passed to the second phase of CRE 2014 will receive management consulting and entrepreneurship training in order to develop the idea and the business model.

This project had already been presented in two entrepreneurship contests, having won the award for best business idea on III Entrepreneurship Forum of Angra do Heroismo, Azores University, and reached the semi-finals of the 4th edition of the Contest BES – Realize o seu Sonho, organized by Acredita Portugal (ie, among the best 150 business ideas among 14,300 participants).

This project also integrated the Prometeus Project, an initiative of the discipline of Entrepreneurship, from the Management degree from Angra do Heroismo. A students group used the idea of producing Shiitake on logs as a case study to work their business plans skills, and the project benefited from the presence of entrepreneurs who rated and commented the business idea. The Prometeus III culminated with the aforementioned Entrepreneurship Forum de Angra do Heroismo, wherein said panel awarded this Shiitake production project on as the best business idea. This project desires to formalize their connection with the University of the Azores, having already initiated dialogue with the CITA-A with the intent of becoming a Spin-Off of this academic institution.
