PESTDISPLAT_2CAP: “Platforms for recording and modelling pests and diseases affecting crops in Macaronesia

  • Team: Environmental Health in Islands (EHI)
  • Type: INTERREG
  • Category:International Research Project
  • 2025 to 2028

Summary

PESTDISPLAT_2CAP aims to strengthen cooperation and institutional capacity for the monitoring, modelling and management of crop pests and diseases in Macaronesia. The project focuses on the adaptation and implementation of two already operational digital platforms in Madeira, Cabo Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe, with the University of the Azores as lead partner and the University of Madeira as FEDER partner.

The first platform will compile and organise information on pests and diseases affecting crops in the target regions, including established organisms, quarantine pests and species with potential risk of introduction. The second platform will support the digital registration of field monitoring data for economically important crop pests, integrating these records with climatic information obtained from automatic meteorological stations installed in the field.

By combining field observations, pest records, climatic variables, georeferenced information and ecological modelling tools, PESTDISPLAT_2CAP will contribute to the development of predictive models for pest occurrence, spread and risk. These outputs will support the production of phytosanitary warnings, risk maps and web-based decision-support tools for technicians, farmers and public authorities.

The project is structured around three main phases: understanding the needs and obstacles to implementation; adapting the platforms to local contexts; and reusing them through field monitoring, data integration, training and technical exchange. In doing so, PESTDISPLAT_2CAP promotes knowledge transfer, regional cooperation and the use of digital innovation to improve crop protection, early warning systems and sustainable agricultural management across Macaronesia.
