Summary

From 27 to 29 August 2013, São Miguel Island was surveyed along an elevational transect ranging from 50 m a.s.l. (Nordeste, Lomba da Fazenda, Miradouro do Pelado) to 1000 m a.s.l. (Nordeste, Santo António Nordestinho, Planalto dos Graminhais) to obtain a systematic inventory of the bryophytes living in natural environments. A total of six sites were examined, separated by approximately 200 m elevation steps. At each site, two 10 m x 10 m plots were established within 10-15 m from each other, and within each plot, three 2 m x 2 m quadrats were randomly selected and sampled for bryophytes using microplots of 10 cm x 5 cm, collected into paper bags. Six substrates were studied within each quadrat: rock, soil, humus, decaying wood, tree bark and leaves/fronds; three replicates were made for each substrate, whenever available and colonized by bryophytes. For tree bark, microplots were sampled at up to three trees in a stratified manner at three height intervals: low stratum (1–50 cm), medium stratum (51–100 cm), and high stratum (101–200 cm). The study yielded 471 event records and 2067 occurrence records, resulting in the identification of 92 bryophyte species, 39 families, 47 Bryophyta, and 45 Marchantiophyta.
